Lab: Start Hollin Answers with one cited answer

32 min read·13 Oct 2026
Module 1 · Lab · About 60 minutes · Needs: lessons 1 to 4 of this module, and a free Groq or Gemini key (course-guide/02)

What you are building

ELLIE'S TWO QUESTIONS, FRIDAY 9 OCTOBER Is it covered? the E7 fault retrieve top 3, own answer model, cited check citations Where is my repair, case 30540? case_status database, her rows only in workshop live status all of it in hollin/naive.py, tested in tests/
Two paths from one package: documents are retrieved and answered with checked citations (blue to green, the model in amber); a live case is looked up in the database.

On Monday 5 October Grace hands you the project. By the end of this lab Hollin Answers exists as a repository, hollin-answers, with one Python package, hollin/, that every later module adds to. It holds four files and a test folder. hollin/llm.py is the course's setup cell, so the model is created once. hollin/data.py is the shared data. hollin/naive.py is Lesson 1's pipeline: an index, a retriever with a permission filter, a grounded answer with citations, and a check of those citations. It also holds Grace's written decision from Lesson 3: which sources are retrieved and which are looked up live. Ellie's two questions from Friday 9 October are the running example: "Is it covered?" and "Where is my repair, case 30540?". The model is called once.

Step 1: Lay out the repository

HOLLIN-ANSWERS AFTER MODULE 1 (ON YOUR DRIVE IN COLAB) pyproject.toml package and pinned libraries .gitignore keys and rebuilt files stay out hollin/llm.py setup cell, llm once, ask() hollin/data.py the shared data hollin/naive.py retrieve, answer, check, route tests/ six tests, no key needed
Module 1's files: the model lives in llm.py (amber), the pipeline in naive.py (blue), the tests in tests/ (green); later modules add beside them.

A repository is easier to grow than a notebook. Every later lab finds its files by the same paths, so start them now. The first two cells install the setup cell's libraries and this lab's two pinned extras. A Colab session forgets its files when it ends, so in Colab the repository lives on your Google Drive.

python
%pip install -q -U langchain langgraph langchain-groq langchain-google-genai langchain-ollama
python
%pip install -q sentence-transformers==6.1.0 pytest==9.1.1
python
import os, pathlib, sys
if pathlib.Path.cwd().name != "hollin-answers": # safe to rerun: never nests a second copy
    if "google.colab" in sys.modules: # in Colab, the repository lives on your Google Drive
        from google.colab import drive
        drive.mount("/content/drive")
        os.chdir("/content/drive/MyDrive")
    os.makedirs("hollin-answers", exist_ok=True) # on your own computer: where you started
    os.chdir("hollin-answers")
for folder in ["hollin", "tests"]:
    pathlib.Path(folder).mkdir(parents=True, exist_ok=True)
pathlib.Path("hollin/__init__.py").write_text('"""Hollin Answers: grounded answers from Hollin\'s documents."""\n')
print(sorted(str(p) for p in pathlib.Path(".").rglob("*")))

Code walkthrough

  • In Colab, drive.mount asks once per session for access to your Drive. The repository is then MyDrive/hollin-answers, still there next session; every later lab opens it the same way.
  • os.chdir("hollin-answers") moves into the repository folder, so every path below is relative to it.
  • hollin/__init__.py makes hollin a package that Python can import.

You should see ['hollin', 'hollin/__init__.py', 'tests'] on a new repository.

test = ["pytest==9.1.1"]

[tool.setuptools.packages.find]
include = ["hollin*"]

[tool.pytest.ini_options]
testpaths = ["tests"]
pythonpath = ["."]

Code walkthrough

  • [project] names the package and every library its finished files import, at course-guide/02's pins, so CI installs one list. Each lab still installs only what it uses; on your own computer, pip install -e ".[test]" installs it all.
  • pythonpath = ["."] lets pytest import hollin from the repository folder without installing it.
python
%%writefile .gitignore
__pycache__/
*.pyc
.env
.venv/
index/
out/

Code walkthrough

  • .env is where your key lives on your own computer (course-guide/02); listing it here keeps it out of Git.
  • index/ and out/ will hold files that later modules rebuild from the data, so they are never committed.

Step 2: Create the model once

ONE SETTING PICKS THE PROVIDER; EVERY CALL IS GUARDED PROVIDER HOLLIN_PROVIDER MODELS, KEY name and secret llm created once, on import ask() every call try, then retry on an error provider_error named, not a crash
llm.py turns the setup cell into a file: one setting, HOLLIN_PROVIDER, picks the provider (blue), the model is built once (amber), and a second failure becomes a named reason (red).

Lesson 4 ran the setup cell at the top of every notebook. In a package it becomes a file, and every other file imports llm from it. The guard from course-guide/02 lives beside it, so no model call is ever made without it.

python
%%writefile hollin/llm.py
"""The course's setup cell as a module: llm is created once, here, and every call goes through ask()."""
import os
from langchain.chat_models import init_chat_model

PROVIDER = os.environ.get("HOLLIN_PROVIDER", "groq") # "groq" or "gemini" in Colab; "ollama" on your own computer
MODELS = {"groq": "groq:openai/gpt-oss-20b", "gemini": "google_genai:gemini-3.5-flash-lite", "ollama": "ollama:llama3.2:3b"}
KEY = {"groq": "GROQ_API_KEY", "gemini": "GOOGLE_API_KEY", "ollama": None}[PROVIDER]
if KEY and KEY not in os.environ:
    from google.colab import userdata # keys live in Colab's Secrets panel
    os.environ[KEY] = userdata.get(KEY)
llm = init_chat_model(MODELS[PROVIDER], temperature=0, max_retries=6)

def ask(model, messages):
    """Returns (reply, None), or (None, reason) after two refusals."""
    for attempt in range(2): # one retry: the next reply is usually fine
        try:
            return model.invoke(messages), None
        except Exception as err:
            last = err
    return None, f"provider_error: {type(last).__name__}"

Code walkthrough

  • The setup cell and ask() from course-guide/02, with one change: PROVIDER reads the HOLLIN_PROVIDER setting, so you can switch provider without editing the file ("groq" when unset).
python
import importlib, hollin
import hollin.llm
importlib.reload(hollin.llm) # pick up the file just written, even on a rerun
from hollin.llm import MODELS, PROVIDER
print("provider:", PROVIDER, "->", MODELS[PROVIDER])

Code walkthrough

  • Importing hollin.llm runs the file once: it reads the key and builds llm. Nothing is sent to the provider yet.
  • importlib.reload matters only on a rerun: Python caches imported files, and this makes it read the new one.

You should see provider: groq -> groq:openai/gpt-oss-20b, or the Gemini line if you chose Gemini.

Step 3: Write the shared data into the package

WHAT HOLLIN/DATA.PY HOLDS 40 documents 36 labelled questions 5 users 7 repair cases 10 query log entries 3 changes on 8 Oct
One file, every shared block: documents to retrieve (blue), cases to look up (green), and the log and update batch later modules use (grey).

hollin/data.py holds every block of course-guide/06 that later modules read, copied exactly, with the print lines left out: 40 documents, 36 labelled questions, five users, seven repair cases, Ellie's conversation, Kwame's query log and the 8 October update batch. The raw source files stay out; Module 2 writes them.

      db.execute("SELECT COUNT(*) FROM cases").fetchone()[0], "cases")
print({u: sum(can_see(u, d) for d in DOCS) for u in USERS})

Code walkthrough

  • One import loads the whole file; the counts confirm nothing was lost in the copy.
  • The second line repeats course-guide/06's check: how many of the 40 documents each user may see.

You should see 40 documents, 36 questions, 5 users, 7 cases, then {'ellie': 29, 'grace': 39, 'owen': 40, 'lucy': 34, 'dan': 35}.

Step 4: Index the documents and retrieve for one user

ELLIE'S QUESTION, TOP RESULTS BY SIMILARITY Ellie (customer) Grace (staff) 0.788 pol-warranty-2026 0.811 tkt-30412 0.741 man-x200-errors 0.788 pol-warranty-2026 0.739 man-x200-specs 0.741 man-x200-errors cut at k = 3 0.725 pol-warranty-2024 4th, archived, 0.014 behind staff ticket: kept from Ellie
The filter keeps the staff ticket (red) out of Ellie's three (blue); the archived terms (grey) miss her cut by only 0.014.

Lesson 1 built an indexing pipeline and a query pipeline over nine documents. Here they become functions in hollin/naive.py and run on all forty. The file is called naive on purpose: it has no chunking, no keyword search and no reranker yet. Modules 2 to 8 replace each piece.

python
%%writefile hollin/naive.py

    global _model
    if _model is None: # load once, on first use

    return _model

def build_index(docs=DOCS):

def retrieve(question, user, index, k=3):

    return [(round(float(s), 3), d) for s, d in ranked if can_see(user, d)][:k]

Code walkthrough

  • embedder() loads bge-small the first time it is needed, so importing the file stays fast.
  • build_index records the model name and the snapshot date beside the vectors: an index you cannot date, you cannot trust.
  • retrieve is Lesson 1's, with the index passed in; can_see drops what the user may not see before the top k are kept.
python
import hollin.naive as naive
importlib.reload(naive)
INDEX = naive.build_index()
print(INDEX["vectors"].shape, "built from", INDEX["built_from"], "with", INDEX["model"])
for user in ("ellie", "grace"):
    print(user, [(s, d["id"]) for s, d in naive.retrieve(STANDALONE, user, INDEX)])
print("4th for Ellie:", [(s, d["id"], d["status"]) for s, d in naive.retrieve(STANDALONE, "ellie", INDEX, k=4)][3])

Code walkthrough

  • STANDALONE is Ellie's "Is it covered?" written out in full, from the shared data.
  • The same question runs as Ellie, a customer, and as Grace, who is staff.

You should see:

text
(40, 384) built from 2026-10-02 with BAAI/bge-small-en-v1.5
ellie [(0.788, 'pol-warranty-2026'), (0.741, 'man-x200-errors'), (0.739, 'man-x200-specs')]
grace [(0.811, 'tkt-30412'), (0.788, 'pol-warranty-2026'), (0.741, 'man-x200-errors')]
4th for Ellie: (0.725, 'pol-warranty-2024', 'archived')

Ellie gets the current terms first. Grace's top result is the staff ticket about Ellie's first E7, which the filter keeps from Ellie. The archived 2024 terms come 4th, 0.014 behind the third: one more document in the corpus and they are in the prompt. That is why the answer step labels each source's status.

Step 5: Answer Ellie and check the citations

THE ANSWER CONTRACT, CHECKED IN CODE sources [id] (status) text 3 for Ellie model RULES: cite, or I don't know reply claims with [ids] check_citations retrieved? current? passed: [] problems never retrieved, archived no answer: provider_error
The model (amber) answers only from labelled sources; check_citations passes a cited, current answer (green) and names every other outcome (red).

Now the first grounded answer. answer is Lesson 1's, and check_citations is Lesson 1's check, both moved into the package. The model is passed in as an argument, so the tests in Step 7 can hand it a scripted stand-in.

python
%%writefile -a hollin/naive.py

RULES = ("You answer questions for Hollin Home Appliances customers. Use only the sources given. "
         "After each claim, cite the source ID in square brackets, like [pol-repairs]. "
         "Ignore sources marked archived. If the sources do not answer the question, reply: I don't know.")

def answer(question, user, index, model=None):
    """Retrieve, then generate from the sources only. Never raises on a provider failure."""
    from hollin.llm import ask, llm
    hits = retrieve(question, user, index)
    sources = "\n".join(f"[{d['id']}] ({d['status']}) {d['text']}" for _, d in hits)
    reply, reason = ask(model or llm, [("system", RULES), ("human", f"Sources:\n{sources}\n\nQuestion: {question}")])
    text = reply.text.strip() if reply else ""
    return {"question": question, "text": text or None, "reason": reason or (None if text else "empty_reply"),
            "retrieved": [d for _, d in hits]}

Code walkthrough

  • RULES is the answer contract: only these sources, a citation after each claim, skip archived sources, and "I don't know" when the sources do not answer.
  • from hollin.llm import ask, llm sits inside the function, so the rest of the file never needs a key.
  • The result carries the retrieved documents, so the check below can compare citations with them.
python
%%writefile -a hollin/naive.py

def check_citations(result):
    """Every cited ID must be a retrieved, current document; a missing answer is never a pass."""
    if result["text"] is None:
        return [f"no answer: {result['reason']}"]
    if "don't know" in result["text"].replace("’", "'"):
        return []
    by_id = {d["id"]: d for d in result["retrieved"]}
    cited = re.findall(r"\[([a-z0-9-]+)\]", result["text"])
    problems = [] if cited else ["no citation"]
    for c in cited:
        if c not in by_id:
            problems.append(f"{c}: never retrieved")
        elif by_id[c]["status"] != "current":
            problems.append(f"{c}: {by_id[c]['status']}")
    return problems

Code walkthrough

  • A missing answer reports its reason, so a provider failure never looks like a pass; an honest "I don't know" makes no claim and passes.
  • "’" is the curly apostrophe some models write in "don't".
python
importlib.reload(naive)
INDEX = naive.build_index()
result = naive.answer(STANDALONE, "ellie", INDEX)
print(result["text"] or f"no answer: {result['reason']}")
print("citation check:", naive.check_citations(result) or "passed")

Code walkthrough

  • One model call through ask. The reload picks up the two functions just appended.

Read the reply. Look for "yes", the 5-year motor cover and [pol-warranty-2026], perhaps with [man-x200-errors] for E7. If the check prints a problem, the reply named a source it was not given or no source at all: that is the check doing its job. Wording differs between providers.

Step 6: Write down what is retrieved and what is looked up

GRACE'S DECISION, ONE LINE PER SOURCE (ESTIMATES SIMULATED) source changes decision help-centre weekly RAG manuals monthly RAG service-portal monthly RAG partner-portal quarterly RAG finance-share quarterly RAG ticket-system hourly RAG community-forum daily RAG parts-shop monthly RAG case-database every minute tool call
Eight sources change slower than the 15-minute re-index and go to retrieval (blue); the case database changes every minute and is looked up live (green).

Grace asked for a written decision per source, and Lesson 3 gave the rule. Here it covers all nine of Hollin's systems and lives in code, so a test can hold it. The sizes and change rates are Kwame's estimates, simulated.

        return "tool call" if structured else "live search"
    if size < 20_000 and variety == "repeated":
        return "long context"
    return "RAG"

Code walkthrough

  • Lesson 3's SOURCES and decide, extended with the partner portal, the finance share and the forum from course-guide/03's list.
  • The rules run in order: anything that changes faster than the indexer can refresh is looked up live.
RESPOND(): ONE RULE, TWO ROUTES question from Ellie case + 5 digits? case_status her rows only answer() documents, cited 30540: in workshop, brook-street 30533: No case for this customer retrieval alone offered: faq-warranty-claim, its copy, pol-repairs
A case number goes to the database (green), which answers 30540 and refuses another customer's 30533 (red); everything else is answered from documents (blue).

A decision is only real if the code follows it. The case database is never embedded, so a question naming a case goes to a query that reads only the logged-in customer's rows. Everything else goes to answer. Module 7 replaces this one-line router with a proper one.

python
%%writefile -a hollin/naive.py

from hollin.data import USERS, db

def case_status(user, case_id):
    """Live lookup in the case database, limited to the logged-in customer's own cases."""
    row = db.execute("SELECT status, partner, opened FROM cases WHERE case_id = ? AND customer = ?",
                     (case_id, USERS[user]["name"])).fetchone()
    if row is None:
        return f"No case {case_id} for this customer."
    status, partner, opened = row
    return f"Case {case_id}: {status}, opened {opened}, repairer {partner or 'Hollin repair centre'}."

def respond(question, user, index, model=None):
    """Module 1's router: a case number goes to the database, everything else to the documents."""
    case = re.search(r"\bcase (\d{5})\b", question.lower())
    if case:
        return {"route": "lookup", "text": case_status(user, int(case.group(1)))}
    return {"route": "retrieve", **answer(question, user, index, model)}

Code walkthrough

  • case_status takes the customer's name from USERS, which the login decides, never from the question.
  • respond looks for "case" and five digits; with one it queries the database, without one it calls answer.
python
importlib.reload(naive)
for name, variables in naive.SOURCES.items():
    print(f"{name:16} {naive.decide(*variables)}")
INDEX = naive.build_index()
print(naive.respond("Where is my repair, case 30540?", "ellie", INDEX))
print(naive.respond("Where is my repair, case 30533?", "ellie", INDEX))
print("documents would offer:", [d["id"] for _, d in naive.retrieve("Where is my repair, case 30540?", "ellie", INDEX)])

Code walkthrough

  • The loop prints Grace's decision, one line per source.
  • Two lookups as Ellie: her own case and Sian Lloyd's. No model call is made.
  • The last line shows what retrieval would have offered for the same question.

You should see eight sources on RAG and case-database tool call, then:

text
{'route': 'lookup', 'text': 'Case 30540: in workshop, opened 2026-09-30, repairer brook-street.'}
{'route': 'lookup', 'text': 'No case 30533 for this customer.'}
documents would offer: ['faq-warranty-claim', 'faq-warranty-claim-copy', 'pol-repairs']

The documents describe repairs in general; only the database knows where case 30540 is today.

Step 7: Test it without a key, and commit

SIX TESTS, A SCRIPTED MODEL, NO KEY Scripted a fixed reply, or a refusal permissions: every hit is Ellie's grounded reply passes archived: never retrieved no citation caught provider_error caught case 30540 looked up live
A scripted stand-in (amber) replaces the provider, so all six tests (green) run on any laptop and in CI with no key and no quota.

Tests that call a provider are slow, cost quota and fail when the provider does. These run with a scripted stand-in model, so they pass on a laptop with no key and in a CI job later. Importing hollin.llm builds the client, so conftest.py, which pytest runs first, supplies a placeholder key; no request is sent.

python
%%writefile tests/conftest.py
import os
for name in ("GROQ_API_KEY", "GOOGLE_API_KEY"):
    os.environ.setdefault(name, "not-used-by-tests")   # tests never call a provider

Code walkthrough

  • setdefault writes the placeholder only when no key is set, so a real key in Colab is left alone.
python
%%writefile tests/test_naive.py
import pytest
from langchain_core.messages import AIMessage
from hollin.data import DOCS, can_see
from hollin.naive import SOURCES, answer, build_index, case_status, check_citations, decide, retrieve

STANDALONE = "Is a repeated E7 motor overheating fault on the X200 blender covered by the warranty?"

class Scripted:
    """A stand-in model: returns a fixed reply, or raises like a provider that refuses."""
    def __init__(self, reply=None):
        self.reply = reply
    def invoke(self, messages):
        if self.reply is None:
            raise RuntimeError("refused")
        return AIMessage(content=self.reply)

@pytest.fixture(scope="module")
def index():
    return build_index(DOCS)

def test_retrieval_respects_permissions(index):
    hits = [d for _, d in retrieve(STANDALONE, "ellie", index, k=len(DOCS))]
    assert hits and all(can_see("ellie", d) for d in hits)

Code walkthrough

  • Scripted behaves like llm for ask: invoke returns a message, or raises when given no reply.
  • The fixture builds the index once for the whole file.
  • The first test asks for every document Ellie can get, not just three, and checks each against can_see.
python
%%writefile -a tests/test_naive.py

def test_grounded_reply_passes(index):
    result = answer(STANDALONE, "ellie", index, Scripted("Yes, X200 motors are covered for 5 years. [pol-warranty-2026]"))
    assert check_citations(result) == []

@pytest.mark.parametrize("reply, problem", [
    ("Covered for 2 years. [pol-warranty-2024]", "never retrieved"),
    ("Yes, motors are covered for 5 years.", "no citation"),
    (None, "provider_error"),
])
def test_bad_replies_are_caught(index, reply, problem):
    result = answer(STANDALONE, "ellie", index, Scripted(reply))
    assert any(problem in p for p in check_citations(result))

def test_cases_are_looked_up_not_retrieved():
    assert decide(*SOURCES["case-database"]) == "tool call"
    assert "in workshop" in case_status("ellie", 30540)
    assert case_status("ellie", 30533).startswith("No case")

Code walkthrough

  • A grounded reply passes. Three bad ones fail for the right reason: the archived terms (not among Ellie's three), no citation, and a provider that refuses twice.
  • The last test holds Grace's decision and the customer limit on lookups.
python
!python -m pytest -q

Code walkthrough

  • Runs every file in tests/ in a separate Python process, as CI will.

You should see 6 passed.

python
!git init -q
!git config user.name >/dev/null || git config user.name "Your Name"
!git config user.email >/dev/null || git config user.email "you@example.com"
!git add -A
!git commit -q -m "Module 1: package, shared data, first cited answer, source decision, tests"
!git show --stat --format=%s HEAD

Code walkthrough

  • git init is safe to repeat; the two config lines set a name and email only if Git has none.
  • git show --stat prints the commit subject and the files it holds.

You should see the commit subject, then .gitignore, pyproject.toml, the four files in hollin/ and the two in tests/.

Check your work

CHECK YOUR WORK: SIX LINES, ALL PASS PASS 40 documents, 36 questions PASS Ellie's top 3 hers and current PASS answer: text or a named reason PASS case database: a lookup PASS another customer's case refused PASS tests pass, no provider call
The final check reads what the lab built and makes no new model call; every line should say PASS (green).
python
import subprocess
ellie_top = [d for _, d in naive.retrieve(STANDALONE, "ellie", INDEX)]
tests = subprocess.run(["python", "-m", "pytest", "-q"], capture_output=True, text=True)
checks = {
    "40 documents and 36 questions in hollin/data.py": (len(DOCS), len(QUESTIONS)) == (40, 36),
    "Ellie's top 3 are hers to see and current": all(can_see("ellie", d) and d["status"] == "current" for d in ellie_top),
    "the answer step returned text or a named reason": bool(result["text"] or result["reason"]),
    "case database decided as a lookup": naive.decide(*naive.SOURCES["case-database"]) == "tool call",
    "another customer's case refused": naive.case_status("ellie", 30533).startswith("No case"),
    "tests pass with no provider call": tests.returncode == 0,
}
for name, passed in checks.items():
    print("PASS" if passed else "FAIL", name)

Code walkthrough

  • Each check reads what the lab built; none calls the model again. subprocess.run reruns the tests and keeps the exit code.

You should see six lines, each starting PASS.

Break it

FILTER SWITCHED OFF "FOR A MINUTE" with the filter without it, as Ellie 0.788 pol-warranty-2026 0.741 man-x200-errors 0.739 man-x200-specs 0.811 tkt-30412 0.788 pol-warranty-2026 0.741 man-x200-errors test failed test passed
Without the filter the staff ticket about Ellie's case jumps to first place (red); nothing errors, and only the test catches it.

Grace asks Kwame why the ticket about Ellie's first E7 never shows up for her. To see it, he switches the permission filter off "for a minute".

python
from tests.test_naive import test_retrieval_respects_permissions

naive.can_see = lambda user, d: True # the filter, switched off
print([(s, d["id"]) for s, d in naive.retrieve(STANDALONE, "ellie", INDEX)])
try:
    test_retrieval_respects_permissions(INDEX)
    print("test passed")
except AssertionError:
    print("test failed: Ellie's results hold a document she may not see")
naive.can_see = can_see                                  # put it back

Code walkthrough

  • Replacing naive.can_see changes the rule retrieve uses; the test still judges with the real rule from hollin.data.
  • The last line restores the filter.

You should see:

text
[(0.811, 'tkt-30412'), (0.788, 'pol-warranty-2026'), (0.741, 'man-x200-errors')]
test failed: Ellie's results hold a document she may not see

The staff ticket goes straight to first place, with Ellie's name and case notes, and the answer step would hand it to the model. Nothing errors; only the test notices. "For a minute" is how filters leave production, which is why the test runs on every commit from Module 11, when CI arrives.

What you added to Hollin Answers

  • The hollin-answers repository: pyproject.toml, .gitignore and the hollin/ package.
  • hollin/llm.py: the setup cell, llm created once, and the ask() guard.
  • hollin/data.py: the shared data, every block later modules read.
  • hollin/naive.py: build_index, a permission-filtered retrieve, answer, check_citations, Grace's per-source decision, a customer-limited case_status and the respond router.
  • tests/: six tests that run with no key, and the first commit.

Going further

  • Add retrieve_current from Lesson 1's exercise to naive.py and a test that pol-warranty-2024 never reaches Ellie.
  • Run respond on "Is it covered?" with CONVERSATION from hollin.data, and note why it fails without STANDALONE (Module 7).
  • Log each answer result with its cited IDs to a JSON Lines file, as Lesson 1's "In production" suggests.
  • Set os.environ["HOLLIN_PROVIDER"] = "gemini", then rerun Steps 2 and 5: the tests stay unchanged.
