Lab: The Northdesk repository and its first records

39 min read·
Module 1 · Lab · About 60 minutes · Needs: lessons 1 to 3 of this module

What you are building

WHAT YOU BUILD One repository, 14 files northdesk/ data.py probe.py basics/ (3 files) trace.py v1 docs/ design.md failure-modes.md tests/ test_data.py test_trace.py requirements.txt .gitignore 14 files, kept in your Drive
The lab leaves one repository of 14 files: Northdesk's code (blue), the two design documents (navy) and the tests that guard them (green).

Helen wants every decision in one place, with its evidence beside it. The lessons wrote into Colab's own folder, which empties when the session ends; this lab joins their files in one repository, northdesk-platform, in your Google Drive. Every later lab adds to it.

The package northdesk gets the shared data and the lessons' files; docs gets the failure-mode table and the design skeleton with its decision register; two test files guard the data and the call log. No cell calls a hosted model, so you need no key.

Open a new Colab notebook, call it module-01-lab.ipynb, and run each cell in order.

Step 1: Open the repository in your Drive

COMPARE Temporary folder, kept folder /content the lessons' files emptied when the session ends the lab MyDrive/northdesk-platform the lab's repository kept between sessions run once per lesson every later lab adds to it
The lessons wrote into Colab's temporary folder (grey); the lab moves the work into a folder in your Drive (blue) that outlives the session.

The files must outlive the session, so the first cell connects your Google Drive and moves the notebook into the repository folder. It is safe to run twice.

python
import os
import sys

if os.path.basename(os.getcwd()) != "northdesk-platform": # not in the repository yet
    if "google.colab" in sys.modules: # in Colab: the repository lives in your Drive
        from google.colab import drive
        drive.mount("/content/drive")
        os.chdir("/content/drive/MyDrive")
    os.makedirs("northdesk-platform", exist_ok=True)
    os.chdir("northdesk-platform")
print("working in", os.path.basename(os.getcwd()))

Code walkthrough

  • If the current folder is already called northdesk-platform, nothing happens, so a second run never nests folders.
  • "google.colab" in sys.modules is True only in Colab. There drive.mount asks for access and your Drive appears as /content/drive/MyDrive.
  • os.makedirs(..., exist_ok=True) makes the folder if it is missing and os.chdir moves into it. Every path from here on (northdesk/..., docs/..., tests/...) is inside the repository. On your own computer the folder is made where the notebook started.

working in northdesk-platform

In Colab a line Mounted at /content/drive comes first. The pop-up needs your Google account, so the course's test run took the "own computer" path.

Step 2: Add %%ensure and the small files

HOW IT WORKS What %%ensure does with a cell %%ensure path file exists? yes: kept your file untouched no: wrote and remembered %%ensure -a path written this session? added, or skipped
%%ensure writes a file only when it is missing and leaves yours alone (green); with -a it adds a part only to a file it has just written.

A plain %%writefile replaces a file on every rerun. So the course defines %%ensure, which writes a file only when it is missing; with -a it adds a part, but only to a file this session has just written. Every later lab pastes this cell first.

python
%pip install -q pytest==9.1.1
python
from pathlib import Path
from IPython.core.magic import register_cell_magic

WROTE = set()                              # files this session's %%ensure wrote

@register_cell_magic
def ensure(line, cell):
    """%%ensure path: save the cell unless the file exists. %%ensure -a path: add to a file this session wrote."""
    *flags, name = line.split()
    path, text = Path(name), cell.rstrip("\n") + "\n"
    if flags == ["-a"]:
        if name in WROTE:
            with path.open("a", encoding="utf-8") as f:
                f.write("\n\n" + text)
            print("added to", path)
        return
    if path.exists():
        WROTE.discard(name) # a kept file gets no added parts either
        print("kept", path)
        return
    path.parent.mkdir(parents=True, exist_ok=True)
    path.write_text(text, encoding="utf-8")
    WROTE.add(name)
    print("wrote", path)

Code walkthrough

  • @register_cell_magic turns ensure into the command %%ensure: line is the rest of the first line, cell the rest of the cell.
  • *flags, name = line.split() keeps the last word as the file name and any -a in flags. cell.rstrip("\n") + "\n" ends every part with one newline, so a file is byte-identical in Colab and on a laptop.
  • Without -a: an existing file prints kept; a missing one is written, folders included (unlike %%writefile), and remembered in WROTE.
  • With -a: the part is added after a blank line only if this session wrote the file; after a kept it is skipped.
  • To replace a file on purpose, delete it and run its cells again.

It prints nothing: it only defines the command.

python
%%ensure northdesk/__init__.py
"""Northdesk platform: the design, and the code that proves it (course: AI System Design)."""

Code walkthrough

  • __init__.py makes the folder northdesk a package Python can import. The lessons created it empty; the repository keeps this one-line docstring.

Run the same cell again and it prints kept northdesk/__init__.py: the file was there, so it was left alone.

Code walkthrough

  • The course's pins from course-guide/07, all 39 lines, written once for the whole course. Colab installs only what each lab needs; on a laptop, pip install -r requirements.txt installs everything.

python
%%ensure .gitignore

__pycache__/
.pytest_cache/

Code walkthrough

  • .gitignore names what Git must never store: .env (your keys), the virtual environment and Python's caches.
  • logs/ holds the call log. Its lines carry users' questions, which are personal data (Lesson 3), so they never go into the repository. cache/ is for the stored model replies of later golden-set runs.

Step 3: Save the shared data as northdesk/data.py

HOW IT WORKS Six blocks, one data file GUIDE 06 BLOCK GIVES 1 tenants, users 360 users 2 documents 471 documents 3 traffic 72,576 rows 4 traces 1,560 traces 5 prices cost_usd() 6 golden sets 54 + 18 northdesk/data.py all six blocks, unchanged all bfada251581c same as guide 06
Six unchanged blocks become northdesk/data.py, and the fingerprint bfada251581c (green) proves the data is identical to the guide's.

Course-guide/06's blocks 1 to 6 go into northdesk/data.py, whole and unchanged. From now on every lab imports the same tenants, documents, traffic, traces, prices and golden sets instead of pasting them. Paste each cell as it is.

print("Lesson 2, retry with a key:", result, "| tickets:", [ticket for ticket, _ in tool.tickets])

Code walkthrough

  • probabilities(..., 1.0) turns Lesson 1's four scores into shares at temperature 1.
  • call_with_retry repeats Aisha's Cases request under the 8-second timeout with an idempotency key; SEED comes from northdesk.data.

The same 46%, 34%, 15% and 5% as Lesson 1, and the same single ticket after 8,269 ms as Lesson 2.

Step 5: Add the call log

BY THE NUMBERS Seven calls, all logged LOGS/LAB-01.JSONL: OUTPUT TOKENS PER CALL 1 v7 257 tokens 2 v7 257 tokens 3 v7 257 tokens 4 v8 363 tokens 5 v8 363 tokens 6 v8 363 tokens 7 v8 provider_error: ConnectionError
The call log keeps all seven calls: the v7 to v8 jump in output tokens (green) and the failed call (red), which a log of successes would lose.

Lesson 3's call log, northdesk/trace.py version 1, is the first form of Northdesk's tracer. Module 9 turns it into span trees, so it enters the repository now, unchanged.

    with open(path, encoding="utf-8") as f:
        return [json.loads(line) for line in f]

Code walkthrough: ask tries twice, then returns (None, "provider_error: <ErrorName>") instead of raising.

Code walkthrough

  • Tokens and ProviderDown are Lesson 3's stand-ins; runs is Lesson 3's three v7 and four v8 calls, the last one failing.
  • LAB_LOG keeps the lab's calls apart from anything else in logs/; removing it first makes the cell repeatable.
  • The prints count each status and average the output tokens of the successful calls per prompt version.

The table starts with 13 components: eight fail closed to a safe default (green) and five fail open and carry on (amber).

docs/failure-modes.md holds Lesson 1's eight structural differences and Lesson 2's classical failures, in course-guide/03's columns. Both lessons had a provider row, so the table keeps one with both detections. From names the lesson and section (L1.7 is Lesson 1, section 7).

python
%%ensure docs/failure-modes.md
# Failure modes

Started in Module 1 from the eight structural differences (Lesson 1) and the classical failures that still apply
(Lesson 2). Module 11 completes it: every row gets a test in `tests/test_faults.py`, or a reason why not.

| Component | Failure | Detection | Fails | Fallback | Blast radius | From |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| model output | same question, different answer | probe set, parsed answers | open | cite sources | one reply | L1.1 |
| quality setting | below the quality bar | golden-set score per release | closed | keep last version | all tenants | L1.2 |
| token spend | cost per request spikes | p95 cost per request | closed | budget ceiling | one tenant | L1.3 |
| model latency | seconds, then timeout | p95 per hop | open | stream; secondary | one request | L1.4 |
| provider change | behaviour moves, no deploy | probe diff; deprecation dates | open | pinned model | all tenants | L1.5 |
| answer content | plausible but wrong | gold and citation checks | closed | say not found | one user | L1.6 |
| provider | outage, slowdown or timeouts | provider_error rate; timeouts over 5% | open | fallback chain | every tenant on it | L1.7, L2.6 |
| retrieved text | instruction in a document | red-team probes | closed | no tool without approval | one tenant | L1.8 |
| Ask replica | dies | health check | open | other replicas | requests in flight | L2.1 |
| session state | kept in a replica | lost-history test | closed | shared store | one conversation | L2.1 |
| model-call queue | unbounded backlog | p95 queue wait | closed | reject fast | everyone waiting | L2.2 |
| response cache | no tenant in key | cross-tenant probe | closed | skip cache | two tenants | L2.2 |
| write retry | duplicate action | actions per key | closed | idempotency key | one tenant | L2.3 |

Code walkthrough

  • The first eight rows are Lesson 1's, one per structural difference; the last five are Lesson 2's. The merged provider row keeps Lesson 1's provider_error rate and Lesson 2's timeout rule.
  • Fails says what the system does when the check fails: open carries on, closed takes the safe default.

Step 7: Write the design skeleton and the decision register

WHAT YOU BUILD Ten steps and a register DOCS/DESIGN.MD: STEPS, OWNING MODULE 1 problem M2 2 quality bar M2 3 numbers M3 4 architecture M4 5 data path M5-6 6 request path M7-10 7 trust M12 8 knowing M13 9 failures M11 10 tradeoffs M14-15 THE DECISION REGISTER model two-way prompt version two-way embedding model one-way /ask shape one-way Halcyon retention one-way
The design document holds the ten steps, each owned by a module, and the register: two two-way doors (green) and three one-way doors (red).

docs/design.md becomes DESIGN.md in the capstone. It starts as Lesson 3's ten-step order, each heading naming the module that fills it in, then Lesson 3's decision register, written in two parts.

python
%%ensure docs/design.md
# Northdesk platform: design

The design in the roadmap's ten-step order. Each section is written by the module named in its heading. Every number
in this document comes from `docs/numbers.md` (generated from Module 3 on) or from a measured run.

## 1. Clarify the problem (Module 2)

## 2. Set the quality bar (Module 2)

## 3. Run the numbers (Module 3)

## 4. Pick the simplest architecture the numbers permit (Module 4)

## 5. Draw the data path (Modules 5 and 6)

## 6. Draw the request path (Modules 7, 8, 9 and 10)

## 7. Mark the trust boundaries (Module 12)

## 8. Say how you would know it works (Module 13)

## 9. Name the failure modes (Module 11; the table is docs/failure-modes.md)

## 10. State the tradeoffs, and what you would revisit at ten times the scale (Modules 14 and 15)

Code walkthrough

  • The ten headings are course-guide/01's design order, word for word, with the module that writes each section. Step 9 points at the failure-mode table from Step 6.

## Decision register

Started in Module 1 lesson 3. A one-way door is costly or impossible to reverse and gets an ADR in `docs/adr/` (from
Module 4); a two-way door is decided quickly and noted here.

| decision | to reverse it | fee | others who must act | door |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| model behind the setup cell | change one line in MODELS, rerun the evals | $0 | 0 | two-way |
| Ask prompt version | set the version back | $0 | 0 | two-way |
| embedding model | re-embed every document, rebuild the index | $1,320 | 0 | one-way |
| public /ask response shape | every tenant changes its integration | not a fee | 240 | one-way |
| no provider retention for Halcyon | renegotiate a signed contract | not a fee | 1 | one-way |

Code walkthrough

  • -a adds the register below the ten steps, because this session has just written the file. The five rows are the table Lesson 3 printed.

You should see

The register's numbers must come from code, not from typing. Recompute it with Lesson 3's code and look for each row in the file.

print(len([line for line in design.splitlines() if line.startswith("## ") and line[3].isdigit()]), "design steps")

Code walkthrough

  • DECISIONS and door are Lesson 3's, unchanged; FLEET and PRICE_SNAPSHOT now come from northdesk.data, so the $1,320 embedding fee is recomputed from 1,100,000 documents of 6,000 tokens at the hosted price.

    assert round(d.cost_usd("groq:openai/gpt-oss-120b", 2000, 500), 6) == 0.0006

Code walkthrough

  • fingerprint repeats block 7's function, so the test needs no notebook; bfada251581c is guide 06's all line.
  • The counts and the tenant check catch a block pasted twice or half pasted; the price test pins cost_usd to guide 06's $0.000600.

Code walkthrough

  • tmp_path is a fresh folder pytest gives each test, so the test never touches logs/.
  • The test logs one answered and one failed call and checks both lines: status, tokens, no output for the failure, and the input kept as lists, the way JSON stores pairs.

Code walkthrough

  • python -m pytest runs pytest with the repository on Python's path, so the tests can import northdesk; it finds every test_*.py under tests/.

Break it

BREAK IT A log of successes lies THE SAME SEVEN CALLS, LINES LOGGED trace.py 7 lines draft 6 lines, failure missing the failure 0.143 error rate, trace.py 0.000 error rate, draft
A log written only after a successful reply (red) drops the failed call and reports a perfect provider; trace.py (blue) reports one in seven.

A common first draft of a call log writes its line after reading the reply, so it only ever sees calls that worked. Log the same seven calls with that draft and compare the error rate the two logs report.

python
import json

def logged_ask_draft(ask, model, messages, *, path, **fields):
    """A first draft: logs after reading the reply, so a failed call never reaches the file."""
    reply, err = ask(model, messages)
    if err is None:
        with open(path, "a", encoding="utf-8") as f:
            f.write(json.dumps({"status": "ok", "output": reply.text, **fields}) + "\n")
    return reply, err

DRAFT_LOG = "logs/lab-01-draft.jsonl"
if os.path.exists(DRAFT_LOG):
    os.remove(DRAFT_LOG)
for version, model in runs:
    logged_ask_draft(ask, model, QUESTION, path=DRAFT_LOG, prompt_version=version)
for name, path in (("trace.py", LAB_LOG), ("draft", DRAFT_LOG)):
    logged = read_calls(path)
    errors = sum(c["status"].startswith("provider_error") for c in logged)
    print(f"{name:8} {len(logged)} lines, error rate {errors / len(logged):.3f}")

Code walkthrough

  • logged_ask_draft writes only when err is None, the shape a log takes when it is added after the happy path.
  • Both logs see the same seven calls in runs; read_calls works on either file because each line is JSON.

You should see

text
trace.py 7 lines, error rate 0.143
draft 6 lines, error rate 0.000

The draft reports a perfect provider while one call in seven failed. The table's provider row detects outages by the provider_error rate, so with the draft that detection could never fire. A failure-mode row is only as good as the record behind its detection column, which is why tests/test_trace.py pins the failed line.

What you added to Northdesk

  • A repository, northdesk-platform, in your Google Drive, and %%ensure, the command every later lab uses to fill in missing files without touching yours.
  • northdesk/__init__.py, requirements.txt (course-guide/07's pins for the whole course) and .gitignore, which keeps the call log out of Git.
  • northdesk/data.py: course-guide/06 blocks 1 to 6, fingerprint bfada251581c.
  • The lessons' components, unchanged: northdesk/probe.py, northdesk/basics/ and northdesk/trace.py version 1.
  • docs/failure-modes.md with 13 rows, and docs/design.md with the ten steps and five decisions.
  • tests/test_data.py and tests/test_trace.py: 5 tests, all passing.

Going further

  • Add a row to docs/failure-modes.md for the call log itself: what fails if logs/ fills the disk, and how you would notice.
  • Write error_rate_by(calls, field) that groups the lab's log by prompt_version or model and returns the share of provider_error per group.
  • Add a test that docs/design.md has exactly ten numbered steps, so a later edit cannot drop one.
  • Time import northdesk.data with time.perf_counter(): that cost is paid by every later lab and test run.
