Lesson 2: Turning Harbourline's raw export into trusted data

17 min read·13 Oct 2026
Module 4 · Lesson 2 · About 55 minutes · Needs: Lesson 1 (the TMS export and its manifest); basic Python and pandas

The situation

Wednesday 25 March 2026, week 2. Mei's emailed TMS export passes its manifest check: nine rows sent, nine received. Rafael wants the prototype running on it by Friday.

Arriving whole does not make it right. One consignment appears twice, dates come in two formats, a charge has a decimal comma, and no customer name matches the CRM. This lesson follows HF-88207 (Atlas Office Furniture, damaged desks, declared value £6,500) from raw text to a row the assistant can trust.

TMS_EXPORT: 9 ROWS AS RECEIVED HF-88101 HF-88102 duplicate row HF-88102 duplicate row HF-88145 ISO date, not day first HF-88190 spaces; no delivery date HF-88207 decimal comma 310,00 HF-88233 HF-88260 lower-case c-1077 HF-88301 HF-88207: followed through this lesson
The file arrived whole, but six of its nine rows need a decision before use (red marks a problem). HF-88207, with its decimal comma, is followed through the lesson.
